Investment Management

Good investing doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, complexity in a portfolio is often a liability, not an asset. Most investors are better served by a clear, disciplined strategy they can understand and stick with than by a sophisticated approach they don't fully grasp.

At Multipath Wealth, I build portfolios using primarily low-cost, passively managed ETFs designed to capture broad market returns efficiently. Where appropriate, I incorporate actively managed funds or individual securities when I believe they serve a specific purpose in your portfolio. Every portfolio is built around your individual goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance, and not a generic template.

Your assets are held in your name at either Charles Schwab or Altruist, two independent, established custodians. Multipath Wealth never takes custody of your funds. You retain direct access to your accounts at all times.

Starting with a plan

Before we invest a dollar, we build a written Investment Policy Statement together. This document defines your goals, your asset allocation targets, your risk parameters, and the guidelines we'll follow in managing your portfolio. It serves as a reference point for every decision we make, and it keeps us from reacting emotionally when markets get noisy.

How we think about risk

Risk is personal, and it's not static. Your appropriate level of investment risk depends on your age, your income, your time horizon, your professional and personal liability exposure, and your own emotional comfort with market volatility. A physician early in her career with a stable income and a long runway to retirement can typically absorb more risk than someone five years from retirement living off their portfolio.

I assess risk carefully at the start of our relationship using a structured survey, and we revisit it regularly. Life changes — a new job, a growing family, an approaching retirement — and your portfolio should reflect where you actually are, not where you were when we first met. Risk tolerance is something we're always measuring and discussing.

What ongoing management looks like

Investing isn't a set-it-and-forget-it exercise. Markets move, your life changes, and portfolios drift from their targets over time. I monitor your accounts on a continuous basis and make adjustments as needed.

Among other things, investment management includes:

  • Development and implementation of a written Investment Policy Statement.

  • Portfolio construction using low-cost, diversified investments.

  • Ongoing monitoring and rebalancing.

  • Tax-loss and tax-gain harvesting. T

  • ax-efficient asset location across taxable and tax-advantaged accounts.

  • Roth conversion analysis and planning.

  • Required Minimum Distribution calculation and management.

  • Coordination with your broader financial plan.

Common situations I help with

Many of my clients are medical professionals who come with investment situations that need untangling before we can move forward. A few examples:

Scattered retirement accounts. It's common for physicians and other healthcare professionals to accumulate 403(b) accounts at several prior employers over the course of training and early career moves. These accounts often sit in default investment options, charged fees that aren't competitive, and uncoordinated with each other. I help consolidate and organize these accounts into a coherent strategy, and we do it carefully, paying attention to details like the pro-rata rule for backdoor Roth contributions.

Getting started. Many early-career professionals have been so focused on training and paying down debt that investing has taken a back seat. I help you build the foundation: opening the right accounts, establishing contribution habits, and putting an allocation in place that reflects your situation.
